Herbert Jenkins (JEN)

Arundel Place, London S.W. until 1916, at least, then 3 Duke of York Street, St. James's, London S.W.1.

Herbert Jenkins (1876-1923) was a writer as well as a publisher. He died aged 47 y but his company continued until the early 1960s. His most famous creation as a novelist was Joseph Bindle, who apppeared in a number of Jenkins' novels between 1916 and 1924. The character of Bindle was drawn on the dust jackets of the novels by Saloman van Abbé, who was Edmund Blampied's brother-in-law.

Herbert Jenkins published several novels written by P.G. Wodehouse, two of which were published with a jacket design by Blampied (see below). The true first editions of these books sell for several thousand pounds but later impressions with the same jacket are less costly and quite common.

As well as publishing first editions of new novels, the company also re-issued novels by Victorian authors such as Harrison Ainsworth, who had died in 1888, and gave them a striking new dust jacket to try to make up for their dreariness (see below). I suspect that Blampied designed more dust jackets for Herbert Jenkins than I have found because some were only identified because Blampied had pasted the panel of some jackets into an album (see an example, left), probably retrospectively. The album is not complete and the jackets are in no particular order. I have since found all but one of the books in Blampied's album, plus several other new jackets, just by searching on the internet.

Most of the jackets are lovely, fanciful designs. He was at the peak of his work designing dust jackets, I think. Please look at them.
