Hutchinson's Magazine

Hutchinson & Co., 34 Paternoster Row, London E.C.4

This monthly story magazine was started in July 1919 as Hutchinson's Story Magazine but was soon re-named Hutchinson's Magazine. In 1924 after 61 issues it was changed in size from the standard story magazine format (240 x 165 mm) to a large format (300 x 220 mm, see left), the same size as Good Housekeeping, and the numbering of issues was changed (see below). It was printed on both coated and (cheaper) pulp paper.

Walter Hutchinson published the work of many popular authors such as E.F. Benson, H de Vere Stacpoole, Rider Haggard, and "Sapper" (where the first Bulldog Drummond story appeared), and saw the magazine as an opportunity to serialise a novel and then publish it again in a book, so to sell it twice in effect.

Blampied's illustrations appeared in 31 consecutive monthly issues between December 1921 and June 1924, while in 13 issues he provided illustrations to two separate stories. Blampied illustrated 18 'spook' stories by E.F. Benson and six stories by H. de Vere Stacpoole. One of the illustrations for a story by Benson was used on the cover of a collection of his stories published in 1926 by Hutchinson called Visible and Invisible. Blampied's illustrations also appeared in 23 issues of the magazine Woman, which was started by Hutchinson in April 1924. Woman was merged with this title in 1929, which had reverted to the name Hutchinson's Story Magazine in about September 1928. It had earlier merged with Hutchinson's Mystery and Adventure Story Magazine. The title ceased publication in December 1929 when Hutchinson closed his magazine division.

None of the 112 original illustrations drawn by Blampied for this magazine have been seen. This is perhaps because the company records were destroyed during the Blitz of World War II, according to Victorian Fiction Research Guides
