The Sketch 1912 - 1913

172, Strand, London, W.C.

The Sketch was the first of the major national magazines that published Blampied's work after a long period of seeming inactivity between 1907 and the end of 1911. No published drawings by Blampied have been found from that period. In a flier for an exhibition of his work at St Martin's Parish Church in Jersey he reported that he had been very poor for 10 years and in 1913 he started to really earn - chiefly doing periodical work.

Blampied was 26 years old in 1912. According to the 1911 Census he was living at 13 Airedale Road, Balham, with his brother Wilford, aged 25 y, and Wilford's wife Olive, aged 29 y. Blampied's occupation was listed as Artist (painter) ‘on his own account’, so not employed and working from home. Wilford was listed as a Hosier and by 1934 had his own outfitter's shop at 365, Upper Richmond Road in Putney. Wilford had married Olive Ann Carroll from County Wicklow in Ireland in early 1909 and in 1912 they had a son, whom they named Wilford Edmund Anthony Blampied. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the Second World War and died in 1960, aged 47 y. Wilford and Olive both died three years later in 1963, aged 77 y and 84 y respectively.

[This illustration is said to have been bought by Helena Rubinstein (1872-1965), the Polish-American founder of a cosmetics company and an art collector. The illustration was also used on the cover of an issue of the American magazine Town & Country in February 1913. Perhaps Rubinstein saw this cover and sought to buy the original drawing]
