Fantasio

1, rue de Choiseul, Paris, France

This bi-weekly magazine, which was published in Paris from 1906 to 1935, was edited by Felix Juven, who also edited Le Rire Rouge. The cover of Fantasio was always designed by Auguste Roubille and usually featured a corpulent man and a young woman known as a grisette. The example of a cover to the left represents the entry of the USA into the First World War in April 1917.

The first drawing by Blampied in this title had appeared initially in a British magazine called The Sketch on 9th July 1913 entitled Sand girls, so was probably sold to Fantasio. Although they may have asked for more work by Blampied, as the second and third drawings in the magazine had also first appeared in The Sketch, all subsequent illustrations by Blampied in Fantasio have only been found in that title, so perhaps they were commissioned directly from him thereafter. They were perhaps attracted by his name as much as by his drawings.

Twelve drawings by Blampied appeared in Fantasio between July 1916 (volume 10) and June 1919 (volume 13). Each volume of this magazine (Année) and its page numbers ran from 1st July to 15th June in the following year. No earlier or later volumes have been searched, so there may be more illustrations by Blampied, but I suspect not, because after the war he was extremely busy working for publishers in London.

The drawing by Blampied in issue 234 of 15th October 1916 is notable for the two women wearing rabbit costumes which preceded the Playboy bunny by about 40 years. The drawing in issue 251 of 1st July 1917 had been shown at an exhibition in Paris in May and June 1917 called La Guerre et les Humoristes, which is described in the entry on Le Rire Rouge.
