The Wheat Princes

Jean Webster [Alice Jane Chandler Webster]

This is one of seven novels by Jean Webster, an American writer, published for the first time in the U.K. by Hodder & Stoughton. Four of the titles have a dust jacket designed by Blampied: Patty & Priscilla, Just Patty, Jerry and The Four-pools Mystery. There was an eighth title, Much ado about Peter published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1916, but I have not seen it. This jacket is not signed and could be by Blampied although it is rather like the work of Salomon van Abbé.

Jean Webster (1876-1916) was an American writer and author of several novels published between 1903 and 1915, most of which featured young women. Her novels promoted the idea of education for women, and her characters explicitly supported women's suffrage, a cause that she promoted in her personal life. She died in 1916 aged 39 of puerperal fever after giving birth to her first child.

This novel was first published in 1905 in the USA.
