James William Barnes Steveni was a British author who lived in St Petersburg where he taught English and was a correspondent for The Daily Chronicle (the newspaper that Blampied worked for from 1905-06).
This title was one of a series of five books first published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1914 in a series called the 'Army from within'. They were also published by Doran in the USA. The series included a title called The German Army from Within by 'A British officer who has served in it', later identified as T. Burke. It was not reissued in this series, perhaps because the war with Germany had started.
