Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Carr did not mention this solo volume of poems by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) in his History of the QTP, he only listed the back-to-back version with Christina Rossetti. Two impressions have been seen.

Notes: This small book actually states the year of publication, 1970, a rarity among small books. The book was issued in a Florin Poets series with at least three others: Blake 2, Marvell 2 and Tennyson's Lincolnshire Verse. A florin was a coin of 2 shillings, now 10 pence, probably the price of the book in 1970.

A search using the ISBN in Bookfinder.com brings up an impression of this book with a purple cover, dated 1973 (which is probably the first back-to-back edition). There are 16 copies listed on various versions of Amazon which all seem to have roughly the same description, but in different languages, ranging in cost from $23 to $116. There may be only one copy and all the 'dealers' are going to buy it from the shop that is first on the list and sell it to you for their price. It could also be a cascade, in which each successive 'seller' is buying it at a lower cost and selling it with their mark-up. Though why you would want to buy a copy for $116 when one is available of $23, I don't know.

A search using the ISBN on Amazon.com brings up only one copy, but the author is listed as 'Estelle C.L. Schumacher'. She self-published a book of poems which seems to have got mixed up with the book in a database.

WorldCat dates this ISBN as 1970 and 1975 and lists copies of the 1975 version in five libraries, including two in the Netherlands and one in Belgium.

Jisc shows a copy in the British Library, dated [1975] whereas WorldCat shows a copy in the British Library that is dated 1970.

I think the lesson is: don't believe computer databases.

Notes: This has the same colour cover as the first edition but was printed by a different printer. No titles are listed and there is no date under the colophon. It is assumed to be the second impression. There is a copy at Kettering Public Library which has an accession date of 9 April 1973.
