Limitations: the number of proofs of maps printed by year
Carr apparently determined the number of proofs in an edition from the last two digits of the year in which the map was published, though not all maps conform to this practice, especially the early maps which tended to be issued in relatively small numbers of sheets. The list below shows the years in which maps were issued, in reverse date order, with the number of different maps published. Twelve maps have not been seen, so these numbers will probably change.
- 1982 - 982 sheets, 5 maps: Cheshire 2, Durham 2, Leicestershire 3, Staffordshire 2, Yorkshire 7
- 1981 - 981 sheets, 4 maps: Hampshire 3, Herefordshire 2, Lincolnshire 3, Wiltshire 2
- 1980 - 980 sheets, 6 maps: Derbyshire 2, Kent 3, County Palatine of Lancashire 3, Northamptonshire 6,
Northumberland 2, Wales 2
- 1978 - 978 sheets, 4 maps: Devon 2, Northamptonshire 5, Sussex 3, Yorkshire 6
- 1977 - 777 sheets, 2 maps: Cumberland 1, County Palatine of Lancashire 2,
- 1976 - 776 sheets, 4 maps: Northamptonshire 4, Westmoreland 1, Worcestershire 2, Yorkshire 5
- 1975 - 775 sheets, 4 maps: Cornwall 1, Essex 2, Middlesex 1, Suffolk 3
- 1975 - 750 sheet, 1 map: Staffordshire 1 (note that this assumes the first 2 digits reference the year)
- 1974 - 774 sheets, 5 maps: Cheshire 1, Derbyshire 1, Gloucestershire 3, Nottinghamshire 1, Surrey 1
- 1973 - 773 sheets, 4 maps: Berkshire 2, Dorset 1, Durham 1, Hertfordshire 1,
Some limitations begining with a 7 are not consistent with a year of publication:
- 750 sheets, 4 maps: Shropshire (1, 1974), England & Wales (2, 1973 & 1971),
- 743 sheets, 1 map: Cambridgeshire (1, 1974)
- 705 sheets, 1 map: Norfolk (2, 1975)
Some limitation begining with the number 5 are consistent with the number of sheets:
- 1974 - 574 sheets, 4 maps: Bedfordshire 1, Buckinghamshire 1, Hampshire 2, Warwickshire 2
- 1973 - 573 sheets, 1 map: Yorkshire 4
- 1972 - 572 sheets, 5 maps: Herefordshire 1, County Palatine of Lancaster 1, Leicestershire 2, Worcestershire 1, Yorkshire 3
- 1971 - 571 sheets, 1 map: Yorkshire 2
- 1969 - 569 sheets, 2 maps: Yorkshire 1, Wales 1
Other, smaller, limitations are:
- 560 sheets, 1 map: Sussex (1,1969, also seen with no limitation)
- 550 sheets, 1 map: Northamptonshire (2, 1970)
- 526 sheets, 1 map: Warwickshire (1, 1970)
- 524 sheets, 1 map: Hampshire, (1, 1969)
- 507 sheets, 1 map: Kent (1, 1969)
- 503 sheets, 4 maps: Devon (1, 1970), Essex (1, 1971), Leicestershire (1, 1970), Lincolnshire (1, 1970),
- 502 sheets, 3 maps: Northumberland (1, 1971), Somerset (1, 1971), Suffolk (2,1971)
- 500 sheets, 3 maps: Norfolk (1, 1969), Rutland (1 & 2, 1972), Yorkshire (1, 1969)
- 350 sheets, 2 maps: Huntingdonshire (1, 1971), Oxfordshire (1, 1969)
- 300 sheets, 1 map: Gloucestershire (1, 1969)
- 250 sheets, 3 maps: Suffolk (1, 1968), Wiltshire (1, 1969),
Five maps have been seen with no limitation: Beadle County (1972), Cymru, England and Wales (blue), Northamptonshire (1965), and Sussex (1969), which has also been seen with a limitation of 560 sheets.
