Essex

Carr reported in his History of the QTP (1987) that he had issued three maps of Essex. Only two have designs have been seen but the second design may have been re-issued with the same limitation, with the background printed in colours.

Carr's wife, Sally, was from Essex. They got married in the Methodist Chapel in Elmstead on Wednesday March 14th, 1945. The Chapel is drawn on both maps of Essex with the text: Where an Essex girl married the designer of this map. The reception was held at Bottles Hall, also in Elmstead, the home of Sally's parents.

This map is unusual in that a printer is named: Printed at the Dalkeith Press of Kettering in Northamptonshire.

Thanks to Tim Dean for a photo of a clean map; the limitation is from my stained copy.

MAP-ESS2.1: Second edition, 1st impression

Publisher: J.L. Carr, 27 Mill Dale Road, Kettering

Year: September 1975

ISBN: 0900847425

Limitation: 775 sheets

Size: 614 x 443 mm

Paper: thin white card

Signed: Yes

Proofs where: Kettering Public Library? (map); AH (map)

Notes: This map is dedicated to Thomas Willingale, an elderly and poor man, who fought the enclosure of Epping Forest by landowners & Authority...and won.

The map does not have a coloured background to the land and sea, but has the same limitation as the second impression.

Quite a lot of the design of this map is the same as the first. The changes are mainly around the edge and some illustrations suchas the crests and pig have been moved. However it is different enough to be considered a second edition. The map has a different ISBN, which was registered in September 1975 according to Amazon.

MAP-ESS2.2: Second edition, 2nd impression

Publisher: J.L. Carr, 27 Mill Dale Road, Kettering

Year: 1980s?

ISBN: 0900847425

Limitation: 775 sheets

Size: 614 x 443 mm

Paper: thin white card

Signed: Yes

Proofs where: AH (map)

Notes: This map is dedicated to Thomas Willingale, an elderly and poor man, who fought the enclosure of Epping Forest by landowners & Authority...and won.

This map has been printed with background colours but is otherwise identical to the map above: it has the same text and same limitation. So it is probably a re-issue or more correctly a 2nd impression, although this is not noted on the map. If it is, it probably was issued in the 1980s, not in 1975.
