Beadle County

There are framed proofs of this map of Beadle County, South Dakota, Public Library in Huron, South Dakota, and in the Beadle County Court House, on loan from the Dakotaland Museum. I thank Jennifer Littlefield of Huron Public Library for finding a proof of the map for me.

Dedication: To Mr Belcher of Belcher's Mound who, in 1878, desirous of preserving his large family from taxation and education left these parts where he had trapped up and down the river - and moved on westwards. See: Belchers Ford in The Battle of Pollocks Crossing, page 25.

Notes: The text at the top of the map dates it: 'Drawn by an Englishman who lived there in 1938-39 and who claims a dispensation for error on the ground of time and distance, 1978'. Next to the colophon is a copyright mark © next to a small oval image of St George, the patron saint of England, slaying the dragon. This is the only of Carr's maps known to have the copyright symbol, probably as a small joke (see photo).
