Sandbach's Dictionary of Astonishing British Animals

I wonder how Mr Carr and Mr Sandbach got in touch? In a letter to Douglas Maxwell, a publisher, J.L. Carr said about 'Sandbach's Dictionary': He provided the facts I wrote them up.

The only information given by Carr about Mr Sandbach is that he lives in the Kent town of Tunbridge Wells. According to Rogers (2003), Richard Gilbert Edgar Sandbach (1911-1999) was a teacher, publisher and museum curator. He also compiled an anthology of Psalm 23.

He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1933. In 1957 he was teaching History at the Clarendon School in South Oxhey near Watford. In 1968 his address was given as The Municipal Museum in Tunbridge Wells. He collected books and put his bookplate inside them (see left) as well as pasting in detailed annotations, which suggests that he was planning other publications.

According to JISC Library Hub there are copies of this small book in the Brotherton Library at the University of Leeds, the National Library of Wales and, fittingly, the Natural History Museum in London. The copy at Leeds is credited to R.G.A.(sic) Sandbach. No copy is listed in the catalogue of the British Library.
