Carr contributed this essay to the book Fine Glances, which was published in 1991. In 1993 the Tern Press reissued the essay in a limited edition of 140 copies signed by Nicholas and Mary Parry of the Tern Press. I suspect that it was to be signed by Carr too, but perhaps he was too ill to do so.
A version of this story with the same title first appeared in the Birmingham Evening Mail and Despatch on Saturday 2nd May 1964, page 8.
