The Royal Magazine

C. Arthur Pearson Ltd., Henrietta Street, London W.C.

The Royal Magazine was a companion story magazine to Pearson's Magazine, which had been started two years earlier, in 1896. It was intended to compete with The Harmsworth Magazine in an increasingly crowded field of fiction magazines. It continued to publish fiction until December 1934, a total of 434 monthly issues, and then became a magazine devoted to cinema and films.

Blampied's drawings appeared in The Royal Magazine intermittently over a fairly long period, from July 1913 to October 1925, including two cover designs, for the issues of August 1914 and April 1916. I have inspected all 198 issues published between November 1910 (vol 25) and April 1927 (vol 57). Single issues of the magazine are hard to find but I have eight bound volumes, each of six issues, which contain 16 stories with illustrations by Blampied. The volumes were bound in decorated cloth for sale by the publisher (see left) and sadly do not contain the illustrated covers. The bound copies in libraries usually contain the whole magazine, including the illustrated covers.

Numbering: Volume of 6 issues, from May to October then November to April, all issues sequentially numbered

Price: 6 pence, increasing to 1 shilling.
