The Queen

Field & Queen (Horace Cox), Windsor House, Bream's Building, London E.C. in 1914-16

Hudson & Kearns Ltd, Hatfield Street, Stamford Street, London, S.E. 1 in 1933-35

The subtitle of The Queen was The Lady's Newspaper; its sub-sub title was The Court Chronicle. It was a Royalist weekly newspaper aimed at a loyal aristocracy and women in high society. The magazine was established in 1861 and was published for over 100 years before it merged in 1970 with Harper's Bazaar to become Harper's and Queen. The name Queen was soon dropped and it became Harper's Bazaar.

Blampied's work has been found in the magazine in two brief periods 17 years apart: in 25 issues between November 1914 and December 1916, then again in 19 issues between November 1933 and March 1935. There may be more as I haven't searched it exhaustively. Blampied mostly provided illustrations for a chapter of a story, which was usually serialised, so his work appeared in several consecutive issues. The colour drawings in the early issues were of women's fashions, of which I have one example, cut from the original magazine. A later issue reproduced a portrait of Queen Mary (see left) but all other drawings were in monochrome. Single copies of the magazine are rare. I have only four Christmas issues and a single page.

Numbering: Consecutive in quarterly volumes of 13 weekly issues.

Price: 6 pence in 1914-16; 1 shilling in 1933-35. Christmas issues were twice the price.

Pages: 52 in 1935.

Dimensions: 400 x 275 mm in 1914-16; 337 x 255 mm in 1933-35

Editor: Not known.

Printer: the publishers (see above)

Blampied issues: 44

[This portrait of Queen Mary was probably done from photographs. Blampied didn't enjoy doing portraits, but this was probably a commission. The original painting, which was oil on board, was sold at an auction at Phillips in London of Modern British Paintings, Drawings, Watercolours and Sculpture on 13th June 1989, lot 105. It sold for £2,600. ]
