During the First World War several magazines flourished by bringing news from the front to an audience that couldn't afford the large format six-penny magazines such as The Illustrated London News and The Graphic. Newspapers such as The War Illustrated cost two pence and in 16 pages offered The Best Official Photographs, none of which were of the front as they were not permitted, and unrealistic drawings in monochrome of imagined events. After the war this newspaper tried to reinvent itself as The New Illustrated, sub-titled A picture record of our time, but it didn't last long and petered out in March 1920, but not before Blampied had designed three bright covers.

Published: Previously The War Illustrated from 28 August 1914 (vol 1, no 1) to 8 February 1919 (vol 9, no 234); then The New Illustrated from 15 February 1919 (vol 1, issue 1) to 10th January 1920 (vol 2, no 48); then renamed The Record Weekly New Illustrated from 17th January 1920 (vol 2, no 49) to 20th March 1920 (vol 3, no 58) when it merged with Penny Pictorial.
