The Bystander, 1922


Blampied began working again for The Bystander in August 1922, and they seem to have forgotten about him as he was asked to do minor line drawings for weekly articles on dogs by Kennelman. The credit for the first small drawing was given to Blampiea. After doing seven weeks of drawings for Kennelman he was given some more susbtantial commissions. The drawing in the issue of 15th November 1922 seems like a predecessor of his drypoint called The speech of the evening. The other drawings mostly feature pretty women, but the four in pen and ink (only three are shown), illustrate Blampied's technique as an etcher: lots of short lines that create a sense of light and shade.

The number of colours used to print drawings was increasing (see left), but they had to be used carefully to create highlights. This requirement was a major influence on Blampied's later art which often contained what he called notes of colour, small patches of bright colours, often done in pastels over watercolours.
