The Bystander, 1916 - 1918

Blampied's three drawings in The Bystander in early 1916 were lighter than much of the art in the magazine at that time, and featured the role of women doing jobs formerly done by men. Blampied returned to live in Jersey towards the end of 1916 when general conscription was announced. While he waited to be called up he continued to work for books and magazines, sending his work by post to London. There was a gap of about 9 months in his drawings for The Bystander between July 1917 and April 1918, but the five drawings that were printed by the magazine in 1918 were quite substantial. All featured women, with captions that were puns on military terms.

Blampied's drawings during this period were mostly painted in colours but - sadly - printed in monochrome. The drawings were all decorative: they were not drawn to illustrate a story or an article, they were single commissions from Blampied's imagination, for which he was paid a fixed fee, probably of 2-3 guineas. This would have been a useful income for a married man paid the wage of a Lance Corporal in the Royal Jersey Garrison Batallion.
