The Bystander, 1912 - 1915

Blampied seems to have come to the attention of the weekly news magazines in 1912 and his work can be found here and in The Sketch, with a few drawings in The Sphere and The Graphic (to come). They were usually not related to any article but were simply decorative. Colour printng was rare, presumably because it was expensive, and was usually limited to the Christmas number which cost 1 shilling. The First World War also limited the number of decorative drawings as the focus was on warfare and the death of a large number of young men whose family probably read The Bystander. The death rate among the officer class was proportionately higher than among enlisted men.

Blampied's drawings during the war are notable for the fact that they focus on women, and present a woman's perspective on events and life. The drawing in the issue of 16th September 1914 is a case in point (see left). It was reproduced in a book of pictures about the war published by The Graphic, when the war was still a novelty and people thought it would be over quickly.

Type: MO = monochrome drawing; CO = colour drawing; PC = political cartoon; the number indicates the number of drawings or pages.
