The Art of Edmund Blampied in magazines: 1940 - 1966.

These pages list periodicals that contain articles about Edmund Blampied published between 1940 and the year of his death in 1966. Some of them are illustrated but I only have poor photocopies of the articles. There are no items illustrated in colour.

Edmund Blampied and his wife decided to remain in Jersey in early 1940 after every islander had been offered passage to the U.K., so they were trapped in Jersey when the Germans invaded the Channel Island in June 1940 and remained there until Liberation in May 1945. There were no exhibitions of Blampied's work during World War II in the UK but there were two in the USA: an exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1941, where Harold Baily provided many of the items on show and when Blampied's print 'A Jersey vraic cart' [AA: 183; AH:39.1] was issued to subscribers of the Cleveland Print Club; and an exhibition of 36 pictures for sale at the Vose Galleries in Boston in January 1942. Many of these had probably been consigned to Guy Mayer, who sold Blampied's pictures in New York, and he sent them up to the Vose Gallery. The Blampied's remained in Jersey after the war, living in a succession of flats, but travelled by air to London now and again to visit friends.

Blampied held no more exhibitions in London after the war, so there was little coverage in the art press. He held three exhibitions in Jersey, at the Société Jersiaise in 1946, 1960 and 1964, and two at the galleries of T.R. Annan in Glasgow, in March 1947 and May 1953. There were exhibitions in the USA: two at Brooklyn Public Library in 1947 and 1956, where Harold Baily was a trustee and lent many pictures from his personal collection, and one at the John Nelson Bergstrom Art Center and Museum in Neenah, Wisconsin. Blampied exhibited two or three paintings at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1950, and at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1953, 1958 and 1960. Prince Philip bought one of the paintings shown in Scotland in 1958 and one of Blampied's watercolours was given by the Island to Princess Margaret on her wedding in 1960.

Edmund Blampied died in Jersey on 26th August 1966.

Prints are identified in catalogues raisonnné: CD = Campbell Dodgson (1926); AA = Arnold & Appleby (1996): AH = forthcoming.

Notes: Phillipps states that Blampied had 'a first show of his etchings at the Leicester Galeries in London in July, 1913' but no evidence has been found of this in catalogues at the Courtauld Institute Library.

Blampied: I am actually quite keen on landscape paintings but like to introduce some touch of active life into it, whether a horse or a human being. It then somehow identifies landscapes' companionship with humanity. I'm under the impression that a landscape can be lonely.
