Young April

Egerton Castle

Egerton Castle (1858-1920) was an author, antiquarian, and swordsman. This novel was first published in 1899 by Methuen.

The jacket design was commissioned by Edwin Chater Jack in a letter to Blampied in Jersey dated 21st November 1916:

We are sending you another book Young April by Egerton Castle. At your convenience please send us a sketch for the cover of this book. It is for the 9d series, same style as The Image in the Sand. I think the book will appeal to you. It would be well to keep the different designs as strikingly different from each other as may be possible.

Notes: It is interesting to note that the same title listed on the back of the jacket is by Agnes and Egerton Castle whereas the published novel was by Egerton Castle, alone. The colours of the jacket may have faded. My copy was bought from a bookseller in Canada. It has a sticker on the front pastedown for J.F. Patterson, Druggist and Stationer, Almonte, Ont.
