Horace Annesley Vachell (1861-1955) was an English writer of biographies, stories and novels. This novel was first published in 1908 by John Murray.
The design for this jacket was first used on The Vermilion Box (1917) in Nelson's Continental Library, but was cut to remove the background. The design was commissioned in March 1917, although the letter is missing from the Nelson Archive. The rough sketch was acknowledged on 4th April and the finished drawing on 12th April. The copy of The Waters of Jordan in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University has an accession date of 21 June 1918.
