This is one of three annuals published by Thomas Nelson and Sons for children of different ages. The Jolly Book was for the oldest age group: it was said by Nelson's that it was dear to the heart of Boys and Girls from nine to twelve years
. The Nursery Book was for the youngest children while The Chummy Book was advertised for children who can just read, so from 4 to 8 years old.
The Jolly Book contained a selection of stories or extracts from stories already published by Thomas Nelson and 16 colour plates, all printed on glossy card on one side only and bound in, each between 8 pages of text printed on rough paper. One of the colour plates in this Annual was by Blampied for a poem called The Strange Case of Uncle
(see below).
