The Priest

Béatrix Beck, translated by Constantine Fitzgibbon

Béatrix Beck was born in Switzerland, became a French citizen in 1955, and died in Paris in 2008, aged 94y. She won the Prix Goncourt for this novel in 1952, which in French was called Léon Morin, prêtre, and was published by Editions Gallimard. She was secretary to the writer André Gide.

The design for the jacket is not signed; there is a credit inside the front fold-in: Wrapper design by EDMUND BLAMPIED. It is uninspired, to say the least. I suspect that Blampied was asked for a design by Sir Robert Lusty, a friend who was Deputy Chairman on Michael Joseph until 1956. But Blampied hadn't designed a dust jacket for over 10 years, and was 66 years old by then.
