Jersey's Roll of Honour and Service (1919)

This large book, which is bound in paper wrappers, lists all the men from Jersey who died (Roll of Honour) or served (Roll of Service) during or immediately after the First World War, so between 1914 and 1919. No women are listed, but I'm sure there were some. A total of 862 men died: 570 (66%) were killed in action, 111 (13%) died of wounds and 181 (21%) died of disease. Another 5,430 men from Jersey served in the armed forces. The population of the Island in 1911, the date of the last census before the war, was just under 52,000, so about 12% served during the war, or perhaps a quarter of all males on the Island. The men named on the Roll are listed here.

Notes: Twenty-one men named Blampied are listed in the Roll, of whom five died. Edmund Blampied is listed on page 28. He was a Lance Corporal in the Royal Jersey Garrison Batallion from 10th July 1917 to 27th January 1919, so for just over 18 months. His brother Wilford, who is listed as Wilfred, served with the Gordon Highlanders. There are two John Blampieds on the list of men who served. Brother Alfred was a baker in St Martin, so was not called up.

The original illustration for the frontispiece is in the collection of Jersey Heritage but is catalogued as a print, see here.
