Joseph Crawhall, Wood Engraver: babes in ye wood.

This is a facsimile reproduction of The moft Lamentable & Deplorable HISTORY of the TWO CHILDREN IN THE WOOD engraved and published in 1883 by Joseph Crawhall (1821-1896) in an old-fashioned style. Carr wrote in the front that Crowhall (sic) dusted his engraved blocks with a fairly convincing antiquity, echoing the rough jobs hawked by chapmen and sold to folk who normally didn't buy books. He concluded: I like to suppose this series prolongs that tradition.
