Fleetwood Thorne

Captain Thomas Fleetwood Joseph Nicol Thorne (1888-1915) of the Grenadier Guards was killed in action aged 27 y at the Battle of Loos in 1915 while he was trying to save a drummer. His body was never found. He is commemorated on Loos War Memorial. He was son of Augustus and Mary Frances Thorne of Highfield Park, Heckfield. Fleetwood was educated at Eton and Christ Church College, Oxford. His assets at his death were valued at £147,000, which is worth about £11.5 million today. The went to his widowed mother. The Latin motto means 'I neither fear nor despise'.
