Thomas A. Nelson

Thomas Arthur Nelson (1876-1917) was the grandson of the founder of the Edinburgh publisher Thomas Nelson and Sons, which was established in 1798. He played rugby for Scotland. John Buchan, who was a Director of Thomas Nelson and Sons, dedicated his novel The Thirty-nine Steps to him. Nelson seved as a Captain attached to the Machine Gun Corps and was killed aged 41 y on the first day of the Battle of Arras in World War I, one of 160,000 casualties in that battle. The Welsh poet Edward Thomas was killed in the same battle on the same day.
