Adèle Essex

This bookplate was for Adèle Grant (1859-1922), who was an American vegetarian who married George Devereux de Vere Capell, 7th Earl of Essex, in 1893 and became Countess of Essex. She was painted by a number of artists, including a portrait by John Singer Sargent. The building is Cassiobury House, which was demolished in 1927, although the stables were retained and now house a drug rehabilitation centre. The grounds of the house were bought to provide a public park and nature reserve for the people of Watford.
