I think the text in the scrolls is supposed to read 'To lack wisdom and to have learning is a load of books on an asses back', but it doesn't read like that. I suspect it's based on a Japanese proverb 'Knowledge without wisdom is a load of books on the back of an ass'. Her sister, Beatrice, had a bookplate designed for her in 1897. She was the daughter of Dudley Robert Smith, but is not named as one of his children. She died in 1940, without having married or left any trace except for her bookplate.
